This is a loader, (also known as a "goat"), putting the freshly picked fruit onto a trailer. Next stop is the packing house. Each of those wooden "bins" holds about 44 of our finished 2/5th bushel cartons (or about 900 lbs).
Florida grows many types of grapefruit; white, pink, red, and "dark red" (flame, star ruby, ray ruby). We bring the "marsh ruby" also known as pink grapefruit to NC. We think they mature the fastest and have the best overall flavor.

Citrus trees need lots of water, this is an example of "flood" irrigation. Most growers now use "microjet or microsprinkler" for more precise timing and conservation of water resources.

Orange Blossoms in the spring, the start of the annual cycle. In bloom, the entire tree will be white as snow and the smell is like perfume. Only a small percentage of the blooms will make it to the fruiting stage, most will drop off. The quality of the bloom is critical to the final quality of the fruit.
